The possibility of the United Kingdom to terminate its membership in the European Union, popularly called Brexit, could damage the bloc while increasing the challenges it faces, a senior White House official told reporters on Thursday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Earlier this month, the UK government announced it would spend over nine million pounds of taxpayers' money to issue pro-EU leaflets, informing the Brits about major risks and dangers of Brexit. London mayor Boris Johnson and Eurosceptic cabinet members accused the government of "disgracefully" wasting the public money.

"We would not want to see Brexit that could potentially damage the European Union and increase the challenges that it faces," the official stated.

US Deputy National Security Advisor Ben Rhodes noted that President Barack Obama believes it is up to the people of the United Kingdom to decide how to vote on the issue.

Earlier on Thursday, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Christine Lagarde said the fund considers Brexit as a significant risk to the global economic growth.

UK citizens are set to vote on June 23 in a referendum on the country's EU membership, after Prime Minister David Cameron and the leaders of the 27 European Union member states reached a deal in February to grant Great Britain a special status within the bloc.
