Iran, Italy Sign Six Political, Economic, Cultural Cooperation Deals

Iran and Italy have signed six memorandums of understanding aimed at boosting bilateral cooperation in various fields, media reported Tuesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Italian delegation, comprising 250 business and public sector officials and headed by Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, arrived in Tehran earlier in the day with a primary aim of discussing mutual economic cooperation between Tehran and Rome.

The cooperation documents were signed on Tuesday in Tehran in the presence of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Renzi, Tasnim news agency reported.

The agreements cover a broad range of areas, including economic, political and cultural cooperation, in particular, in the fields of tourism, renewable energy and rail transport.

The news comes in the wake of renewed European economic interest toward Iran, as the European Union, the United Nations and the United States lifted economic sanctions from Iran in January following the implementation of Tehran's obligations under the nuclear deal signed last year with six world powers to ensure the peaceful nature of its nuclear activity.

Shortly after the sanctions were lifted, Rouhani visited Italy as part of his first European tour in 17 years. The visit resulted in the signing of numerous business contracts worth up to $19.4 billion, according to various estimates.
