YEREVAN (Sputnik) — Russia will make all necessary efforts to ensure peace in Nagorno-Karabakh and to facilitate dialogue between the conflicting sides in the disputed region, Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said Thursday.
"It [the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict] is a very complicated issue. The most important now is to preserve peace and the possibility for communication," Medvedev said at the talks with Armenian Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamyan in Yerevan.
"Russia will make all necessary efforts in this respect," Medvedev said, adding that Moscow was ready to continue playing its role as mediator of the Karabakh conflict in the framework of the Minsk Group.
The violence in Nagorno-Karabakh, a breakaway region of Azerbaijan with a predominantly Armenian population, escalated on Friday night. Baku and Yerevan have accused each other of provoking hostilities.
Following three days of heavy fighting, the conflicting sides agreed a ceasefire in the disputed region that came into force at noon on Tuesday.
