The Dutch Socialist Party (SP) launched a campaign on Saturday against Kiev's association agreement with the European Union as the Netherlands is heading toward a referendum on the deal.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Netherlands is the only EU country that has not yet ratified the Ukraine-EU association deal. The Dutch parliament has backed the agreement, but the opponents managed to collect signatures necessary for the referendum to take place. The vote is due on April 6.

"Neither Ukraine's society nor economy is ready for a very far-reaching political, economical and military association with and integration in the actual European Union, whereas Dutch citizens do at this stage no longer believe in an ever growing and ever more powerful European market, in which neoliberal policy prevails above the original idea of European cooperation for the sake of promoting and protecting peace, security and prosperity for all in Europe," Tiny Kox, the SP senior member, told Sputnik.

The campaign is held under the motto "No is three times better: better for Ukraine, better for Netherlands and better for Europe."

The EU-Ukraine Association Agreement, establishing a political and economic association between the two, was signed in 2014.

Under the Dutch law, if the people vote against the EU-Ukraine association agreement in the upcoming referendum, the government will have to review its position on the deal.
