The one-for-one migrant deal between Turkey and the European Union will be temporary and will be later replaced by a different permanent mechanism, the minister for Migration of the Netherlands, which is currently presiding over the European Council, said Thursday.

EU to Monitor Ankara’s Financial Aid Spending on Refugee Crisis
BRUSSELS (Sputnik) —  On Monday, Turkey and the European Union reached an agreement to put an end to the so-called Balkan route, used by migrants to travel through Greece and Macedonia to wealthier EU states.

Under the deal, Turkey pledges to take back all illegal migrants that arrive to the European Union through its border and in their place send legal Syrian refugees to the bloc on one-for-one basis.

"I think that readmission and relocation on a one-for-one principle is temporary [pact], it is a stage. This is necessary because when we reach an agreement, people don't stop coming per se," Klaas Dijkhoff told reporters before a meeting of EU interior ministers.

He added that the European Union needs to show Turkey that EU states are ready to share the burden of migrant relocation.

"We need to show Turkey that we don't leave all the work for them alone… And then we will need to discuss with Turkey a more permanent relocation scheme in the spirit of burden-sharing, and the stage of one-for-one will end," the minister said.
