The Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU) has refused to confirm the party’s leader, German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s statement on the possible lifting of sanctions against Russia, a CDU spokesperson told Sputnik on Tuesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik), Alexander Mosesov – On Tuesday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel reportedly stated at a CDU meeting that the sanctions imposed by the West against Russia should be lifted "better today than tomorrow," cautioning that Germany has not seen the conditions necessary for such a move yet.

"This was an internal meeting, I cannot say anything about it. I won’t comment on it [Merkel’s statement]," the spokesperson said.

In 2014, the European Union imposed sanctions on several key sectors of the Russian economy over its alleged interference in Ukraine’s internal affairs, a claim Moscow has repeatedly denied.

Earlier on the same day, Czech President Milos Zeman said the European Union should lift the anti-Russian sanctions as soon as possible.

On Saturday, a similar statement was made by the chair of the European Parliament Foreign Affairs Committee Elmar Brok on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference.
