Russian President Vladimir Putin and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban will discuss joint projects in the energy sector in Moscow on Wednesday, according to the Kremlin’s press service.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — During the upcoming meeting, Putin and Orban will discuss the possibility of increasing bilateral cooperation, including the implementation of the agreements reached during the Russian president's visit to Budapest in February last year.

The prospects for the further development of economic and trade relations, the promotion of joint projects in the areas of energy and high technology and cooperation in cultural and humanitarian spheres will be on the agenda of the meeting, according to the Kremlin’s press service.

According to Hungarian media, Putin could discuss cooperation in the sphere of nuclear energy with the Hungarian prime minister, including the expansion of the only nuclear power plant (NPP) in Hungary.

A series of deals, signed in late 2014, envisages the construction of units 5 and 6 of the Paks NPP with Russian-built reactors, as well as nuclear fuel supplies and maintenance services. Moscow also issued an $11-billion loan to Budapest for the Paks II project, which Hungary pledged to pay back over the two decades following 2023 when the two new Paks reactors are expected to go online.

In November, Hungary’s Commissioner in charge of the Paks NPP expansion, Attila Aszodi, said that Hungary was open to talks with the European Union to build additional reactors for the power plant in partnership with Russia.

Also in November, Hungarian Ambassador in Moscow Janos Balla said that Hungary was interested in procuring Russian gas after 2019 even if the transit route through Ukraine should be suspended.
