ANKARA (Sputnik) — Davutoglu met with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Ankara earlier in the day to discuss the humanitarian crisis in neighboring Syria, which had forced hundreds of thousands to look for safety in Europe.
Davutoglu said that Turkey would inform the European Union about its initial healthcare and educational projects for Syrian refugees as early as next week – after Ankara receives the money, according to the Hurriyet daily newspaper.
Turkey hosts more than 2 million of Syrian migrants who fled across the border to escape violence in their home country. Syria has been locked in an armed conflict involving various opposition factions and radical Islamist militant groups for almost five years.
Last Wednesday, Brussels approved 3 billion euros in funds to help Turkey cope with the inflow of Syrian migrants after fighting escalated in the northern Syrian region of Aleppo near the Turkish border.
