Turkey and Saudi Arabia could send ground forces to Syria in a bid to undo what Damascus-led forces, assisted by Russian warplanes, have managed to achieve in recent weeks at a time when the US-led anti-Daesh coalition desperately needs a major victory to present as a bargaining chip in the Geneva talks, journalist Andrey Polunin asserted.

"Time is working against the US-led coalition," he wrote for Svobodnaya Pressa. "The coalition needs to create an impression that the Syrian crisis was first and foremost resolved due to its efforts, particularly thanks to its strategy that involves changing the regime in Syria."

Polunin added that major stakeholders in the US-led coalition are pursuing their own agenda and fighting Daesh is not a priority for any of them. Turkey wants to tackle the Kurds since it views the ethnic group as the key threat to its security.

For its part, the US political and military establishment wants to "secure its leadership in the world." For this reason, "Washington wants to see the Assad regime gone. There should also be no visible signs of Russia's contribution to resolving the Syrian crisis. Then the US would be able to show who is the key peacemaker in the world," Polunin suggested.

President of the Middle East Forum think-tank Daniel Pipes echoed this sentiment by saying that "others have higher priorities than getting rid" of Daesh. This is the key reason why the terrorist group "has not been destroyed yet."

Many analysts are unconvinced that Turkey and Saudi Arabia will focus their efforts on tackling Daesh should they send their troops to Syria. Furthermore, the Syrian battlefield is already overcrowded and sending more troops will hardly pave the road to peace.

"The last thing Syria really needs is yet more forces and yet more fighting. What we really need to be pushing for is an end of the conflict," Director for the Council for Arab-British Understanding Chris Doyle told Radio Sputnik.

Yet peace does not seem to be on Turkey or Saudi Arabia's mind since the talks in Geneva were suspended last week just days after the formal peace process was launched – not at least due to Ankara and Riyadh's efforts.

"The pause in the Geneva talks is directly linked to the successes of the Russian-led coalition in Syria," Director of the Center for the Study of Strategic Trends Ivan Konovalov told Svobodnaya Pressa. After all, Damascus' victory means the rebels' loss. This in turn is a loss for Turkey and the oil kingdom since they have backed many of the militant groups, who are trying to overthrow al-Assad.

Polunin believes that recent developments "resemble 1945, when our 'allies' were trying to get to Berlin faster than Soviet forces to claim the victory over Nazi Germany as their own."

Another day, another gulf-monarchie-planet-of-the-ape monkey threat to send troops to Syria and of course, Sputnik announcing the festive event as to lend them legitimacy instead of doing the right thing of ridiculing the peanut-throwing simian b-stards and their impotent trial balloons.

    Enough already!

Then the US would be able to show who is the key peacemaker in the world

They are seriously delusional. I wish the whole world could vote with a YES or NO to the following question:

    - Do you see the USA as the peaceful leader of the world?

95% would vote NO. I have no doubt about that, not for a second. In fact, there cannot possibly be another answer. If one would to think about the USA and the word peace in the same sentence it would be a serious indicator for a mental diagnosis.

It may be a little similar to 1945 to claim the victory and then write the false history for the next 70 years like the allies did,,,the only difference this time is that the Russians are already there and everyone knows that,,,,so what claim have they Got?,,,,like "vendor" said they are delusional

The big joke here is on the TAXPAYERS of the NATO States who have funded Trillions into its war machine over the years that is fundamentally defunct & now exposed in front of the World by Russia as not fit for purpose with a morally bankrupt leadership trying to rule over the entire World by force.

They might talk about sending troops but they won't because they will be massacred and the USA dose not want a war with Russia, so no backing from the US into this mad cap idea.

It is not important what other (USA, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Qatar or any other USA supporting country) think as it is clear that everyone has their own agenda and will try to pursue it to the point of fulfilment.

This what I see as the most important is what Russia thinks and how far is prepared to go in defending own interest. Let us not blind ourselves that in current economic situation in Russia they have very particular interest and I hope they know what is on stake.

If the USA supported terrorism supporting countries as Turkey and SA and Qatar are succeed in their goals than major beneficiary will be USA and the biggest loser beside Syrian people Russia. It is clear that USA are getting pimples all over the body just at mentioning Russia or Putin. USA has one major goal and it is total and for good destruction of Russia which is main obstacle on their way to world domination - hegemony.

Russia is currently No.1 enemy as China is too far back according to their understanding of China even though I believe that they are making big mistake if they have such belief. Russia is surely major thorn in their eye as they believe Russia can and will proliferate their Hi-Tech weapon systems thus creating immense trouble to USA and its allays.

USA is in its firm belief that they destroyed Soviet Union by strangling them economically. They do not see that reality is different that Gorbachev was very week and decisive leader who was worried about his abilities to lead country in hard times such as war. So he believed that if he gives good example west will follow and on this grounds decided to dismember Warsaw Pact and all has been done in Bona Fide which of course was not followed by USA. In their sudden realisation that Russia is alone they declared victory as we have seen in Iraq and in Afghanistan and we know better than that. Yeltsin followed Gorbachev lead and continued to dismantle Russia faster than eye could follow.

However, after Putin arrival all changed and western realised that Russia is no longer their vassal and is going out of line of all other slave followers. That immediately put Russia in spot and only confirmed genetically modified feelings towards Russia and that is FEAR and HATE.

USA knows that Russian unobserved and uncontrolled fast technological advancement and an astonishingly vast array of super weapon systems completely annulled any advantage NATO had over Russia. However there was only hope that Russia military personnel is not motivated and not trained well and that on this basis they would be victorious over Russia.

These unfounded illusions burst as soap bubbles when Russia moved to help Syria. Russian cations took all by surprise and all watched in awe how Russia with greatest ease achieved in three months several times more than USA and its 64 allays in over 2 years of relentless bombardment of sand and rocks in Syria.

USA is aware that it needs to stop Russia but it knows that now it is too late for direct military adventure and that is why they desperately need to break down Syria thus securing a safe territorial corridor through they would build gas and oil pipeline from Golf states all the way over Turkey to EU. That would mean absolute and undeniable end on Russian supplies of oil and gas to EU. Loss of this income and further sanctions would eventually bring Russia to collapse and internal uprising and fighting.

That is the only and undeniable truth of USA intents. Now it is question what Russia will do to secure Syria as it is now. There are no calculations of how much would cost rearmament of Syria to modernise them and to rearm with sophisticated and devastating weapons thus allowing them to defend their own land. In this moment is only one calculation: How much money Russia earns by selling energy products to EU on a let say 10 years term and how much would cost complete rearmament of Syrian army. In my opinion rearmament is much cheaper option than loosing EU market and consequently run in really terrible economic trouble as Russian economy is energy dependent. Energy sector makes 70% of Russian GDP and just for comparison Dubai 20 years ago had 95% dependency on oil, however today they produce more oil than before and still it represents only 5% of their GDP, the rest are tourism and financial services.

Russia needs to re-industrialise its economy and that can be achieved only by drastically reducing imports of technical products starting with automotive products all the way to electronic chips. However, now is up to Russia to decide how far and what will do in Syria in case of ground invasion. Russian fate will be sealed there. If Putin will play sheep and call USA and NATO “friends” and “parthers” than Russia is lost for ever, but if he starts to behave as statesman in war times, than he will impose new very harsh sanctions against ENEMIES and call them by name they are – enemies. He can start by banning imports of all automotive products from enemy countries.

There is one thing Polunin has written that is significant '...that time is running out..'. for whom though, that is the question.

slimyfox, USA is in its firm belief that they destroyed Soviet Union by strangling them economically. They do not see that reality is different that Gorbachev was very week and decisive leader who was worried about his abilities to lead country in hard times such as war.

And he unleashed a lot of anarchical and nationalist forces as well that he then couldn't control, but that the US could turn to its use. The US probably really cannot understand that Putin won't do that. But neither will Putin agree to war. And so the US are safe to provoke.
  • armorin reply toMother Gorilla(Show commentHide comment)
Mother Gorilla, in Pres. Putin, they have found someone they were not used to have, they have found their match, and Russia's role in world affairs is indispensable, Russia's style is different too, Pres. Putin is in a class above all those greedy war-mongers, and finally, they are jealous of Russia. That is a good sign. May Russia remain on the right track, may God Almighty bless that great country and Nation.
  • Mother Gorillain reply toarmor(Show commentHide comment)
armor, yes, but the US may still blackmail Russia into backing down, and then all of us who are for peace will still have to be with Russia!
  • Is it because I am black?
I think Russia should try to restore order in Syria before the US (Saudi Arabia and Turkey) do it.
