ABU DHABI (Sputnik) — Jaysh al-Islam group could take part in intra-Syrian negotiations in Geneva on an independent basis, Sergei Lavrov said Tuesday.

"We know the Syrian opposition delegation that was formed at the meeting in Ryadh includes a group of people who are involved, as we understand, with Jaysh al-Islam… We agreed — and the government delegation agreed with this — that if they take part in the negotiation process, they will have to do this independently," Lavrov said.

"Individual participation with the delegation formed in Ryadh does not mean — and this is noted by everyone, including our American colleagues — that the Jaysh al-Islam and Ahrar ash-Sham are in any way recognized as negotiation partners. This is our stance and the stance of many other members of the International Syria Support Group," he added.
