The United States is unaware of Turkish heavy artillery strikes against positions on Syrian territory, US Department of State spokesperson John Kirby said on Monday.

WASHINGTON Sputnik) — Earlier on Monday, the Syrian Foreign Ministry said Turkish artillery shelled a small town in Syria's northern Latakia province inflicting casualties among the civilian population.

"I don’t have any details on their [Turkish] artillery strikes. I am not aware of the specifics of those operations," Kirby stated when asked about Russian defense ministry video of Turkish cross-border shelling of targets in Syria.

Kirby added that regardless of its internationally-recognized borders, US-led coalition forces have the authority to strike Daesh targets within Syria.

Syria has been in a state of civil war since 2011, with the country’s government fighting a number of opposition factions and radical Islamist groups, including the Daesh, which is outlawed in many countries, including Russia.
