BEIJING (Sputnik) — On Friday, the highly-anticipated talks on Syrian reconciliation, mediated by UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura, began in Geneva.

"The Chinese side welcomes it [the talks]," Lu Kang said. "We hope [the peace talks] will produce a positive outcome, lowering tensions in Syria<…>  We also believe that the peace talks are the only realistic way forward in Syria."

Syria has been mired in civil war since 2011, with the country’s government fighting against multiple opposition factions and terrorist groups. The Geneva talks aim to bring together the Syrian government and opposition to settle the conflict between them.
