The moderate wing of the US political establishment has recently set itself in opposition to the warmongering neocons who have driven the country into prolonged conflicts over the past decade. Now, according to a recent statement by State Secretary John Kerry, they want friendly ties between Washington and Moscow.

In just one week, the West has managed to accuse Russian President Vladimir Putin of both murder and corruption, Il Giornale reported.

First, the UK published its summary view that Vladimir Putin might have approved the murder of former FSB officer Alexander Litvinenko, but without providing any credible evidence. Then, the US Treasury said Putin was involved in corruption, a statement that was made via British media channels – BBC.

"These signals should be explained through the prism of asymmetric warfare, and they are telling no good. It seems like the US is going to settle the score with the Russian leader as soon as possible," the article read.

However, in fact the conflict lies not between Moscow and Washington but in Washington itself. According to Il Giornale, the last 15 years of US foreign policy has been dominated by neocons who destabilized Afghanistan, Iraq, Tunisia, Egypt, Libya and Syria. Now, they have painted Russia into the corner and declared war on terrorism which has led to its spread instead of rooting it out.

Kerry: Sanctions Against Russia Over Ukraine Could Be Lifted Within Months
Nevertheless, some moderate US policymakers have managed to stand against the trend, the article noted. Their true intentions are to defeat Daesh, normalize ties with Iran and ease tensions between the US and Russia.

An example is a speech by US State Secretary John Kerry at the World Economic Forum in Davos. He said that in the coming months anti-Russian sanctions could be lifted if Moscow implements its obligations under the Minsk agreement concerning Ukraine. Of course, his statement cannot be considered the start of a full-scale reset but it gives a hint that some in Washington are finally reaching out a friendly hand to Moscow while the neocons are trying to "sink" it.

"What happened in Washington? And what will Obama do? Will he find courage to correct the mistakes, maybe not all but at least some of them? We should be bracing as the next several weeks would be crucial," the article read.
