TROMSO (Norway) (Sputnik) — The cooperation between the United States and Russia in the Arctic region remains successful despite political differences, the US envoy for Arctic said Tuesday.

"Our cooperation has been very good. [US State] Secretary Kerry obviously speaks frequently with [Russian Foreign] Minister Lavrov. We are very hopeful that minister Lavrov will attend some of our events in the future," US State Department’s Special Representative for the Arctic Adm. Robert J. Papp told reporters at the Arctic Frontiers 2016 conference in the Norwegian city of Tromso.

According to the envoy, the Arctic Council intergovernmental forum allows the two countries to ensure peaceful cooperation in the region and opens opportunities to discuss other issues of the bilateral relations.

Papp stressed that despite a number of political differences between Washington and Moscow, cooperation had to continue.

The Arctic Council and other international platforms, such as Arctic Frontiers, promote cooperation, coordination and interaction among the governments of the Arctic countries, namely Canada, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Russia, Sweden, and the United States.
