Lavrov Recaps Year of Russian Diplomacy in Annual Press Conference
MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The ascension to power of a new Canadian government, headed by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, increases the chances for a thaw in Moscow-Ottawa relations, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Tuesday.

"We are interested in good relations with all countries… The fact that the Liberal Party led by Trudeau won the October elections gives hope that the opportunities to rectify our bilateral relations, which have been artificially and pointlessly strained, emerge," Lavrov told reporters at the press conference reviewing results of the Russian diplomacy's activities in 2015.

The Conservative Party, led by then-Prime Minister Stephen Harper, which has ruled Canada for the past ten years, is known for its cold stance toward Russia.

Many experts have repeatedly expressed hope that Trudeau won't follow Harper's adamant anti-Russia policy line and will normalize relations with Moscow.
