The shelling of the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission (SMM) observers and Russian media workers in eastern Ukraine must be investigated to bring the perpetrators to justice, Russian Foreign Ministry's Human Rights Ombudsman Konstantin Dolgov said on Monday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Sunday, the OSCE SMM confirmed its observers came under fire near the village of Kominternove near Mariupol, close to the contact line in southern Donbass. According to the Rossiya-24 channel, the observers were joined by the Russian VGTRK broadcaster’s journalists.

"Another shelling by Ukrainian security forces of OSCE observers and Russian journalists in Donbass has to be investigated and the perpetrators must be punished," Dolgov wrote in his official Twitter account.

The Russian ombudsman added that the impunity for war crimes encourages extreme nationalists in Ukraine to carry out unlawful acts.

According to SMM and the Russian broadcaster, no member of the team has been injured in the incident.

Southeastern Ukraine has been suffering from a crisis triggered by a military operation launched by Kiev authorities in April 2014 against local militias. The latter have refused to recognize the pro-Western government in Kiev imposed by what they consider to be a coup earlier in 2014.

The OSCE monitoring mission was deployed to the eastern Ukraine to observe the implementation of peace agreements reached by the two sides in the Belarusian capital of Minsk with mediation by Russia, France and Germany first in September 2014 and then in February 2015.
