UN Resolution on Syria Sets Example for Other Conflicts Settlement

Franz Klintsevich, the first deputy chair of the upper-house Committee on Security and Defense, expressed hope that Russia and other UN Security Council members had taken a responsibility to prevent any provocations by adopting the resolution.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — A recently adopted UN resolution on Syria is important as an example to resolve other conflicts, a senior Russian lawmaker said Saturday.

On Friday, the UN Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution outlining a peace process for Syria following talks between 18 ministers of the International Syria Support Group.

"The UN Security Council resolution is important in principle not only for Syrian peace process. Without exaggeration, this is probably the first resolution in recent years, which could be truly significant for resolving other long-standing conflicts," Franz Klintsevich, the first deputy chair of the upper-house Committee on Security and Defense, told journalists.

Klintsevich expressed hope that Russia and other UN Security Council members had taken a responsibility to prevent any provocations by adopting the resolution.

Syria has been mired in civil war since 2011, with forces loyal to Assad fighting against numerous opposition factions and extremist groups.

According to the resolution, talks between the Syrian government and the opposition are set to start in January 2016.
