Turkey Should Seal Border With Syria to Stop ISIL Oil Smuggling - Kerry
BELGRADE (Sputnik) — The border between Turkey and Syria must be sealed to stop illicit oil trade carried out by Daesh terrorists in Syria, but Ankara needs international help to accomplish this task, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Wednesday.

"Instead of launching a prolonged investigation into this issue, the obvious for all must be done — the Turkish-Syrian border must be sealed," Lavrov said at a joint news conference with Serbian Foreign Minister Ivica Dačić in Belgrade.

Lavrov stressed that Turkey alone will not be able to accomplish this daunting task and Ankara will need international assistance to ensure success and transparency of this mission.

"If terrorists will attempt to interfere with creation of barriers on the way of Islamic State supplies, I am sure the Russian air group, together with US-led coalition aircraft, are able and will be ready to provide air support to stop terrorists from interfering with border closing aimed at shutting down illicit transport of oil to one side of the border and movement of militants to the other side," the minister said.

Lavrov added that Kurds militias, who are allied with the US-led coalition, could be used in border closing operations from the Syrian side.
