Trubetskoy wants French President Francois Hollande to take the initiative to meet all world leaders who are involved in this "international issue".
"Then, it would be possible to make a sovereign decision on the unilateral lifting of sanctions," he told Baltkom Radio. "But I don’t know whether Hollande has the right from Brussels to do that. I don’t know whether he is powerful enough to state France’s sovereignty."
According to Trubetskoy, French society has long been calling for the sanctions to be lifted, as everyone realizes they are ineffective and harmful, first of all, for the country.
"This situation with sanctions was not expected. In order to lift sanctions, the Minsk agreements have to be fulfilled. But it’s well-known that Ukraine and those behind its government have always tried to violate them," he underscored.
Relations between Russia and the West deteriorated over the Ukrainian crisis. In July 2014, the US and EU imposed sectoral economic sanctions against Russia. In response, Russia introduced an embargo on food imports from the countries that joined the anti-Russian sanctions.
