MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Western plans to prolong sanctions against Russia look “ridiculous and wild” on the backdrop of the latest tragedies and show that there are problems in political morale, Russian lower house speaker Sergei Naryshkin said Friday.
“Even now the West is discussing the prolongation of so-called sanctions against Russia. On the backdrop of today’s horrible tragedies this looks not just ridiculous, but, frankly speaking, wild and silly," Naryshkin said during a joint upper and lower house session in Moscow.
The speaker added this showed that Western politicians had "problems with political morale and dignity." "I’m sure that the people don’t understand their own politicians," he observed.
Naryshkin said he was confident that "Russian partners will come to their senses" and show more willingness to negotiate with Moscow, instead of confronting it.
On Wednesday, Russia submitted an updated draft resolution on the joint fight against terrorism to the UN Security Council. It followed last month’s downing of a Russian airliner in Egypt and a spate of deadly terror attacks in Paris.
Two draft resolutions calling for united action against terrorism are currently on the UNSC table. The second one was put forth by France in the wake of last Friday’s killings.
