Russia would support a potential Brazilian bid for permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council, the speaker of the upper house of the Russian parliament told Sputnik.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The need to reform the United Nations as a whole and the UN Security Council in particular has been discussed since the early 1990s. The organization’s Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon has repeatedly pointed out at changes are needed within the UN.

"If the decision on the organization's [UN] reforming was taken, Russia, of course, would support Brazil," Valentina Matvienko said answering the question about Brazilian efforts to join the UN Security Council as a permanent member.

According to Matvienko, membership of such a huge economy as Brazil would strengthen the authority of the Security Council.

Many countries have called for reform of the UN Security Council, including Brazil, Germany, India, Japan, Ireland and Russia. Last month, Russia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin told the UN General Assembly that UN Security Council reform must be based on consensus.
