Russia and Armenia are concerned over the violation of the rights of Christians in the Middle East, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Monday.

YEREVAN (Sputnik) — He also noted that Russia and Armenia had proposed conducting a special event at the UN Human Rights Council dedicated to measures to protect Christians in the Middle East.

"Russia and Armenia are particularly concerned about the fate of Christians, who are persecuted, discriminated against during this crisis, the wave of terrorism, especially emanating from the so-called Islamic State, this terrorist organization and their allies really threatens their [Christians’] lives," Lavrov told reporters after a meeting with his Armenian counterpart Eduard Nalbandyan.

Extremists from the ISIL and the Nusra Front militant groups have become notorious attacking and killing Christians, as well as people from other religious groups and Muslim confessions that differ from the form of Sunni Islamic religious fundamentalism the militants espouse.
