Russia is successfully involved in resolving the conflict in Syria, whereas, the United States has taken the ‘posture of a jealous lady,’ Janis Yurknas, the former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia said.

According to him, in the strained relations between Europe and Russia, the United States is playing an important role, but the large EU countries understand that it is more profitable to be friends with their eastern neighbor, the former minister said.

“I think that the EU is preparing to establish contact. If a truce is reached in Donbass, the sanctions against Russia may soon be taken off. It is necessary for Europe to solve the problems of the refugee crisis right now. Europe needs good relations with Russia now more than ever. Russia is successfully operating in Syria, whereas United States is posing as a jealous lady,” Yurknas said during interview with radio station Baltkom.

Russia has a framework for combating terrorism and its actions in Syria are successful. “I think that somewhere, America understands that Russia is doing the dirty work. The same thing happened in the history of chemical weapons,” the ex-minister said.

Since September 30, following the request of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Russia has been engaged in an airstrike campaign on ISIL targets in Syria.

The Syrian Ambassador to Russia, Riyad Haddad, previously confirmed that the strikes are precisely aimed at the terrorists and not at the opposition or at the civilian population. In addition, he said, since the beginning of the operation by the Russian Federation in Syria about 40% of ISIL’s infrastructure has been demolished.
