The decision by the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk people's republics in eastern Ukraine to postpone local elections will help avoid escalation of the conflict in the country, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said Sunday.

Moscow Welcomes Donbass Republics' Decision to Postpone Local Elections
KIEV (Sputnik) — Earlier this week, Donetsk and Lugansk agreed to postpone their local elections until 2016.

Ukraine is expected to hold local elections on October 25 in the rest of the country.

"Together with the ceasefire and reaching the truce, this not only gives a chance to boost efforts for political and diplomatic settlement, but also allows avoiding military escalation," Poroshenko said during his televised address to the Ukrainian people.
