The ill-designed US policy toward Russia has weakened the West in fighting Islamic extremism, Italian journalist Piero Ostellino wrote in his article for Il Giornale.

"The US made a mistake when it signaled its readiness to boost its military presence along the Russian borders. That was a serious strategic flaw," Ostellino wrote.

Washington Fails to 'Set All NATO Members Against Russia'
"Obama proved he is the worst president who resurrected the Cold War atmosphere without any preconditions for it. Instead, he should have joined forces with Russia against terrorism," he added.

According to the article, the issue of border security has always been crucial for Moscow. The US hurt this "hidden nerve," and now the entire West is facing the consequences.

"Russia’s involvement in an anti-ISIL coalition would mark the resolve of this alliance in the fight against extremists. The fact that Russia launched its own offensive against ISIL in Syria proved this alliance is weak," Ostellino wrote.
