UK Foreign Minister Philip Hammond called on the international community to support Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan that are hosting millions of refugees from war-torn countries of the Middle East and North Africa.

LONDON (Sputnik) – Lebanon, Turkey and Jordan are among the states bearing a disproportionate migrant population. Over four million refugees have fled a four-year civil war in Syria alone, traveling to neighboring countries, according to US-based nonprofit organization Human Rights First.

“I pay tribute to the extraordinary generosity of Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan, who have given a temporary home to many millions of refugees and who have performed this role stoically for years,” Hammond is due to say in his address to the UN General Assembly.

“It is incumbent upon all of us to support them as they bear that burden; to ensure that the UN appeals for Syria are fully funded,” the minister said.

According to the minister, it is important to support those who have been displaced as close as possible to their homes. There will be "a new Syria to build" and the country will need "to draw on the talent of the Syrian people," the minister explained.

The excerpts from Hammond’s speech scheduled for Tuesday evening were published by the UK Foreign Office.
