TEHRAN (Sputnik) — The foreign ministers of Chile and Iran agreed, during a meeting on the sidelines of UN General Assembly, to reopen the embassy of the Latin American republic in Tehran, 35 years after its closure, a representative of the Iranian Foreign Ministry press service told Sputnik Tuesday.
"At the meeting of [Mohammad] Zarif with his Chilean counterpart [Heraldo Munoz] in New York, the latter expressed his country's eagerness to send a high-ranking diplomatic mission to Tehran as a first step toward the development of diplomatic relations to the level of embassies," the representative said.
According to the press service, Chile's Permanent Representative to the United Nations has visited Iran as a non-resident ambassador and handed over his credentials.
The exact dates of when the embassy will commence work are yet unknown.
