During her meeting with Polish President Andrzej Duda on Friday, Merkel said she is strongly against the violation of the Founding Act between Russia and NATO signed in 1997.
The chancellor added that the European NATO countries should focus on the implementation of the agreements reached at the last NATO summit in Wales. She said the Polish president shared her commitment on the issue.
During the Wales summit, a decision was made to establish a special task force which would be ready to protect the eastern borders as well as take part in the construction of NATO infrastructure facilities.
Merkel also pledged to continue talks with the Polish government on the situation with refuges in Europe. She said Europe should be more actively involved in tackling the issue. She also noted that European countries should share the responsibility for political asylum seekers.
Merkel was not the first European politician to voice concerns over the risks the Schengen area may face due to the ongoing migrant crisis. Earlier, the issue was addressed by German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere. Czech Finance Minister Andrej Babis and Italian Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni also underscored the need to change the Schengen rules for asylum seekers.
