Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Maj. Gen. Hassan Firouzabadi on Saturday supported the Iranian nuclear deal signed with the international negotiators in July.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – He also defined 16 advantages the deal and sanctions relief bring to Iranian economy and politics.

"The armed forces have concerns about the impact of the deal on the Iranian defense… But the UN resolution 2231 [in support of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on the Iran deal] and the JCPOA have many virtues that are ignored by the critics," Firouzabadi said, as quoted by the Iranian news agency Fars News.

The Iranian leadership does not have a unified position on the deal. On July 20, Maj. Gen. Mohammad Ali Jafari, strongly criticized UN Resolution 2231. However, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif voiced support of the initiative.

The West had long accused Iran of trying to create a nuclear weapon, imposing a series of sanctions against it.

Iran and P5+1 countries (China, France, Germany, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States) signed a deal ensuring the safe nature of Tehran’s nuclear program, and lifting the sanctions imposed against it, on July 14.

The deal is subject to Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's approval, who had not yet come out publicly in its defense of criticism.
