US Can Re-impose Sanctions on Iran ‘in Matter of Days’ - Treasury

US Treasury Acting Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Adam Szubin said that the US could easily snap back sanctions against Iran, if Tehran violates nuclear deal.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The United States can snap back sanctions on Iran within a few days if Tehran violates the nuclear agreement reached in July, US Treasury Acting Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Adam Szubin said on Wednesday.

“Should Iran violate its commitments once we have suspended sanctions, we will be able to promptly snap back both US and UN sanctions,” Szubin said. “For US sanctions, this can be achieved rapidly — in a matter of days.”

On July 14, Iran and the P5+1 group of countries — China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, the United States and Germany — announced a final comprehensive agreement on Tehran's nuclear program in exchange for sanctions' relief.

Under US law, members of Congress have 60 days to fully review the final nuclear deal with Iran. During the review period, US President Barack Obama will not be able to waive or suspend congressional sanctions currently in place against Iran.

The West has imposed the anti-Tehran sanctions as it believed Iran was trying to develop nuclear weapons under the guise of a civilian nuclear program. The Islamic Republic has repeatedly denied those allegations.
