Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is in talks with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) regional forum, the Foreign Ministry’s information department deputy director said on Wednesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – In a previous announcement, the Russian Foreign Ministry said Lavrov was due to arrive in the Malaysian capital on Wednesday to take part in the ASEAN Ministerial Meeting.

“Sergei Lavrov is holding talks with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi at the ASEAN forum in Kuala Lumpur,” Maria Zakharova wrote on her Facebook page.

The meeting’s agenda was said to include the issues of global security and the prospects of Russia-ASEAN economic cooperation over the next five years.

Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov Stresses Priority in Ties With China

Russia sees its relations with China as a national priority, Sergei Lavrov said.

“The development of Russian-Chinese relations is a priority for Russia, and I hope that it is in the interest of peace and stability.”

Lavrov said last month’s meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping in the Russian city of Ufa underscored that priority.

He announced that Putin will take part in the 70th anniversary of China’s victory over the militarist Empire of Japan during World War II next month at Xi’s invitation.

“I hope that we will be able to discuss preparations for this important visit today.”

Wang noted the success that Russia had in hosting the latest BRICS summit of five developing economies in Ufa last month.

“All this once again confirmed the very high capacity of the Russian side to organize major international events and your country’s important international influence,” the Chinese diplomat noted.

Lavrov was also scheduled to discuss the Ukrainian situation with US Secretary of State John Kerry.

ASEAN was established in 1967 by Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand to accelerate economic, social and cultural development in the region.

Russia has been actively cooperating with ASEAN and participating in the organization's summits since 1990.
