MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to Sanai, Russia and Iran touch on different areas of cooperation, but the two countries, despite considering each other as partners, still have a relatively low level of bilateral trade.
"Sometimes it is explained by the fact that Iran is an energy exporter, and Russia is an exporter of energy too. But it does not mean that we have no other potentials. And the fact that both countries are exporting energy or gas, does not imply that they cannot cooperate," Sanai said.
In January, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and his Iranian counterpart, Hossein Dehghan, signed an intergovernmental agreement on "long term and multifaceted" military cooperation.
If all the parties to the agreement on Iran's nuclear program fulfill their obligations, Tehran will be able to join Western efforts in countering terrorism in the region, the Iran's ambassador to Russia said
The diplomat added that Iran has always fought against terrorism and radicalism, stressing also that the sides should join forces to maintain stability in the Middle East.
