BRUSSELS (Sputnik) — The commissioner was speaking ahead of an emergency Eurogroup summit convened two days after more than 61 percent of Greek voters had rejected austerity measures proposed by Athens' major international creditors in a referendum.
The vote has renewed fears that Greece might default on its outstanding multi-billion dollar debt and leave the Eurozone.
“Grexit would be a failure; it would be a terrible mistake… The Commission doesn’t want it,” Moscovici said, adding that a clear discussion is needed in order to avoid “the worst.”
“It is now up to Greek Finance Minister Mr. [Euclid] Tsakalotos to give concrete proposals, to give good proposals to say where he wants to go,” the commissioner added.
Despite the "No" vote, Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis announced a surprise resignation on Monday. He was replaced by Tsakalotos who had previously served as Greece's Alternate Foreign Minister for International and Economic Relations.
