Iran and the P5+1 group of international negotiators have achieved significant progress in the ongoing nuclear talks in Vienna, a source close to negotiations told Sputnik Sunday.

TEHRAN (Sputnik) — According to the source, the meeting between US Secretary of State John Kerry and Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in the presence of Iran's Atomic Energy Organization head Ali Akbar Salehi and US Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz earlier in the day was held in a positive atmosphere.

"The negotiations have achieved a significant progress," the source said, adding that the much-anticipated agreement between Iran and the P5+1 group, is expected to be titled "a comprehensive plan for joint action."

Iran and a group of the P5+1 countries, comprising Russia, China, the United States, France, the United Kingdom and Germany, are currently holding talks in the Austrian capital of Vienna ahead of reaching the final deal on Tehran's controversial nuclear program.

In April, the P5+1 group reached a preliminary political framework agreement with Iran in Lausanne, Switzerland, which stipulated that Tehran cut back its uranium enrichment activities and decrease the number of centrifuges in exchange for gradual sanctions relief.

The deadline for reaching a comprehensive Iran nuclear deal had initially been set for July 30, but as the date approached, the negotiators decided to extend talks until July 7.

The P5+1 group of international mediators and Iran are now discussing the possibility of issuing a UN Security Council statement immediately after reaching a nuclear deal, a source close to the negotiating process told Sputnik.

"One of the sticking points now is whether at least a UNSC statement, not a resolution, will be issued immediately after the deal is reached," the source said.

Another contentious issue is the lifting of anti-Iran sanctions. The P5+1 group insists on Iran making first steps in implementing the commitments undertaken under the deal, while Tehran wants the sanctions relief first, or at least a written commitment that all the sanctions will be lifted, the source explained.
