MOSCOW (Sputnik) – New sanctions imposed by Canada against Russia will not go unanswered, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said Tuesday.

The Canadian government expanded Monday a list of anti-Russia sanctions, adding three individuals and 14 legal entities.

"New sanctions have only added more negative to Russian and Canadian relations, which are not going through the best of times because of Ottawa in the first place, and, obviously, this unfriendly step will not go unanswered,” Lukashevich said.

Canada is among Western nations that introduced sanctions against Moscow in March 2014 following the legal Crimean reunification referendum with Russia.

Canada has expanded the blacklist several times, citing Russia's alleged involvement in the Ukrainian crisis. The sanction list currently includes 91 individuals and 57 companies.

In August 2014, Russia responded to Western sanctions by announcing a year-long ban on certain agricultural imports from those countries that imposed restrictions, including Canada.

Following the EU decision in late June to prolong the anti-Russia sanctions, Moscow prolonged its import ban for an additional year.
