Austerity measures for Greece demanded by international creditors are debt slavery, the leader of France's right-wing National Front party said on Wednesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Athens is currently attempting to unlock financial aid from its primary international creditors to avoid a default on its multibillion-dollar debt. Its current bailout program expires on June 30.

"You are now asking the Greeks to have another go at this terrible austerity. This is basically a debt slavery that you are imposing on them, against the will of these people," Marine Le Pen said at a plenary session held ahead of the June 25-26 European Council.

Earlier on Wednesday, Athens reportedly rejected counter-proposals by international creditors, including pension cuts and value-added tax increases.

Greece's overall debt stands at about $350 billion, of which $270 billion is owed to the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund.
