WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The United States wants Russia to clarify the legal basis for its travel ban on EU citizens imposed last week, a US State Department official told RIA Novosti on Wednesday.

"The United States supports the legitimate administration of visa laws in all countries and we invite the Russian government to explain the legal standard on which it based these entry bans," the official said.

Washington shares concerns of the European Union over the travel ban list imposed on certain EU politicians by Moscow, the official added.

On Saturday, a Russian Foreign Ministry source confirmed reports that the embassies of EU member states had received a list of 89 politicians, diplomats and military experts barred from entering Russia.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said that Moscow's travel ban list for EU citizens was compiled in response to the EU sanctions campaign.

Brussels and Washington have imposed sanctions against several sectors of the Russian economy and certain high-profile officials, including travel bans, citing Moscow’s alleged involvement in the Ukrainian conflict.

The Kremlin has consistently denied involvement in Ukraine’s internal affairs and called for peaceful resolution of the crisis.
