Germany is worthy of a permanent seat at the five-nation UN Security Council, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said late Friday.

MOSCOW, (Sputnik) — Lavrov also pledged Russia’s support to such aspiring UN Security Council member nations as India, Japan and Brazil, and emphasized that Africa must have its voice heard as well.

"Germany is quite a worthy candidate, a leading European nation."

Germany's bid for a permanent presence on the UN Security Council has been criticized by several emerging economies that are concerned with what they regard as a heavy EU presence at the UN top table of world powers.

"I repeat, Germany ticks all the boxes when it comes to being worthy of UN Security Council membership," he stressed, adding the Council was undergoing an overhaul where it was important not to have the majority pushing their decisions on the rest of the member countries.

The Council is composed of 15 members, including five permanent ones – China, France, Russia, Britain and the United States – and 10 non-permanent members elected for two-year terms by the UN General Assembly.
