The US State Department's removal of Cuba from the State Sponsors of Terrorism list was premature, New Jersey State Governor and possible US Republican presidential candidate Chris Christie said in a Friday statement.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Christie demanded that Cuba extradite wanted criminals back to the United States “before additional diplomatic rights are granted.”

“The United States should not be taking Cuba off the terrorist watch list while we are still in the midst of negotiating details to restore full diplomatic relations.”

On Friday the State Department announced its final decision to remove Cuba from the list, after maintaining the designation for 33 years.

The policy change followed US President Barack Obama’s December 2014 announcement to normalize relations with Cuba.

Christie has served as governor of New Jersey since 2010, and is expected to join the Republican slate of eight candidates running for the US presidential nomination.
