Russia does not intend to break ties with Washington but Moscow will only work with the United States in areas of mutual interest, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.

"Obviously, we are not refusing to cooperate. But we will promote cooperation not because they want closer ties in this or that particular area but because those areas are of interest to us," Lavrov told a Russian TV channel.

No More Strong Arm Tactics: US Wants to Mend Relations With Russia
Snippets of the interview were broadcast on the Rossiya-24 television channel.

Earlier this month, Lavrov told US State Secretary John Kerry that Moscow was ready to work with the United States but the cooperation was "possible only on a fair and equal basis, without attempts to dictate or apply pressure [on Russia]."

Moscow's relations with the United States deteriorated following Crimea's reunification with Russia and over the Ukrainian conflict. Washington accused Russia of meddling in Ukraine's internal affairs, a baseless claim which Moscow has repeatedly denied.
