"President Poroshenko cancelled the visit planned for today," the press office of Polish president said.
It provided no information on the reasons behind the Poroshenko’s decision.
Earlier, news agency UNIAN reported, citing an informed source, that a meeting was planned between Poroshenko and Andrzej Duda who won Polish presidential election.
Later, it was reported that the meeting was cancelled. Duda’s busy schedule, including a visit to Brussels was cited as the reason.
Meanwhile, a publicist from the Polish media outlet Onet.pl claimed that the newly-elected Polish president refused to meet with Poroshenko due to the scandalous law on the glorification of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) in Ukraine.
Polish people would be angry to see Poroshenko at the stadium during the League of Europe final, he wrote.
"Poroshenko signed the law which glorifies murderers as well as gives the right to persecute and jail those people – including Poles – who speak and write the truth about crimes committed by Ukrainian nationalists," the author stated.
UPA militants were responsible for gruesome crimes against Poles during World War II, so the newly-signed Ukrainian law sparked negative emotions among the Polish people.
On April 9, the Ukrainian Parliament adopted the law on the legal status and commemoration of UPA militants. The law designated them as "Ukrainian freedom fighters" and guarantees social benefits for them.
"Duda understood the public sentiments and cancelled his meeting with Poroshenko. […] The meeting would seriously damage the image of the newly-elected president," the author wrote.
During his election campaign, Duda condemned the law on UPA militants. If he met with Poroshenko now, he would neglect his own election promises. What is more, he would have to meet Poroshenko’s demands to give money and arms to Ukraine, the publicist concluded.
