German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier plans to visit Ukraine later this week to discuss the implementation of the Minsk II peace deal between Kiev and the self-proclaimed republics of Luhansk and Donetsk, local media reported Tuesday.

KIEV (Sputnik) — The Minsk II accords, signed by conflicting sides in mid-February, envisioned ceasefire, pullout of heavy artillery and prisoner exchange, but both sides have accused each other of violation the 13-point deal.

"Steinmeier will arrive in Kiev on Friday-Saturday to discuss the Minsk agreements and their implementation," the Ukrayinska Pravda newspaper reported citing a source familiar with the situation.

Germany is one of the four Normandy format countries that brokered the ceasefire deal between Kiev and the two self-proclaimed republics in Ukraine’s east.

France, Russia and Ukraine are the other members of the Normandy quartet.

According to UN estimates, more than 6,200 people have been killed in eastern Ukraine since the conflict erupted in April 2014.
