Washington uses sanctions as a foreign policy tool in a range of cases, imposing the restrictive measures not only on Moscow, Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said Tuesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Anti-Russia sanctions are not giving the result desired by the West, Ryabkov said.

"Sanctions have become one of the first options — Americans use them on any occasion, not only against Russia,” he told journalists, adding that the United States disregards the cost-effectiveness of such restrictive measures.

The United States and the European Union, as well as some other Western nations, have imposed economic sanctions on Russia over alleged involvement in Ukraine internal affairs in order to press Moscow into changing its political stance. Moscow repeatedly denied allegations of its involvement in the Ukrainian crisis and has consistently pursued a peaceful resolution of the situation.

The United States sanctioned Iran over its nuclear energy program over suspicions that Tehran was developing a nuclear weapon. Washington also slapped restrictive measures on North Korea over its missile and nuclear tests, targeting a number of individuals and entities.

In March, the US Administration sanctioned several Venezuelan officials over alleged human rights violations, freezing their assets and banning them from doing business with US companies.
