UN Chief Mulls Peace Support Office in Ukraine

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will continue discussing a peace support office in Ukraine with the UN Security council, he told Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko in a phone conversation Monday, a UN readout said.

UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) — The UN chief and the Ukraine's president talked about the importance of Minsk Agreements implementation and possible support of the peace process by the United Nations.

"In this connection, the Secretary-General informed President Poroshenko that he will be proceeding with consultations with members of the Security Council and others on the possible establishment of a United Nations peace support office in Ukraine," the readout said.

Ban briefed Poroshenko on the discussions he held with Russian President Vladimir Putin during visit to Moscow on May 9, according to the readout.

Last week, the UN chief carried out a trilateral meeting with the presidents of Poland and Ukraine. During the talks, Ban reaffirmed the necessity to observe the ceasefire stipulated by the Minsk deal.

In March the Ukrainian government requested the UN Security Council and the EU Council deploy an international peacekeeping operation in the eastern regions of Donetsk and Luhansk.
