No Strings Attached: Russia, China Forge Ties Yet No Military Alliance
Despite the peaceful and cooperative nature of the Sino-Russian ties, the West and particularly the United States worry that the two countries will form an alliance.

But "China and Russia have repeatedly stated that they will become partners, not allies. They do mean that," the newspaper noted.

Western countries hope that Russia-China relations are temporary and are waiting for the "hidden troubles" in this friendship to surface, the Global Times said.

"They list various 'disputes' and 'suspicions' between the two in order to prove that China and Russia are actually potential opponents," the newspaper noted in an open editorial.

What many nations fail to grasp and hence have not achieved yet, is that Beijing and Moscow have mutual respect for each other and are willing "to handle disputes carefully." This is how relations between two global powers should look, according to the Global Times.

In fact, Sino-Russian relations "are quite normal" and the two countries are "getting on well," the newspaper emphasized.

What the West needs to understand is that "China and Russia's strategic cooperation is not exclusive," whereas the United States and many Western countries perceive nations as either an ally or an adversary.

"It seems impossible for [Western nations] to make friends without making enemies," the Global Times said, adding that the "21st century should be an era without alliances."

The media outlet also noted that the United States and Japan, currently on a course to deepen their military ties, "should be ashamed" in the face of the Sino-Russia relations.
