MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev will meet with Cuban leader Raul Castro in Moscow on May 6 to discuss energy, transportation, and health projects, the Cabinet of Ministers’ press service said Tuesday.
“During the meeting between [the heads of government] of the Russian Federation and Republic of Cuba, discussions are planned on strengthening Russian-Cuban trade and economic cooperation, the realization of joint projects in energy, transportation, and humanitarian spheres, as well as in pharmaceuticals, health, and other issues representing mutual interest,” the press service said.
A Russian lower-house parliamentary speaker told reporters in April that Castro was expected to attend Moscow's Victory Day parade on May 9. He is one of some 25 foreign leaders due to take part in the massive event to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II.
The trip comes amid a thaw in US-Cuban relations after more than 50 years. Last month, the US government warned foreign nations against going to Moscow, pointing to the crisis in Ukraine.
