Western sanctions against Russia over the Ukrainian conflict will likely remain in place, including the oil sector sanctions, Chairman of US Senate Energy Committee Lisa Murkowski told Sputnik on the sidelines of the IHS CERAWeek in Houston, Texas, on Monday.

HOUSTON (Sputnik) — The United States imposed economic sanctions against Russia in March 2014 following Crimea’s vote to rejoin the Russian Federation. The US sanctions have targeted Russian individuals as well as its energy, banking and defense sectors.

"Right now, given the political tensions with Russia, I do not see that [sanctions repeal] happening now. I do not think you are going to be seeing a rush to either pull back or to soften much of anything with Russia right now," Murkowski said, when asked whether any relief of sanctions in the oil sector is possible in the near future.

Murkowski went on by saying that this is where the United States is in its relationship with Russia right now.

"And it is not a good relationship. It is as tense as any time I can recall, " she stressed.
