MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to The Guardian's survey, 76 percent of the respondents said there should be a referendum to decide the country's fate within Europe, while 23 percent thought the referendum was unnecessary.
Of those polled, 46 percent said they would vote to leave the European Union, with 38 percent saying they would vote to remain member of the bloc.
Sixty-one percent of Brits said they did not consider themselves European. On the contrary, almost four in ten surveyed could call themselves European to a certain extent.
The issue of UK membership in the European Union is one of the principal matters of debate in the country prior to the upcoming general election.
Prime Minister David Cameron promised to hold a referendum on Britain's membership in the bloc by 2017 if his Conservative Party won the May 7 vote.
