UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) – The UN Security Council's President for April, Dina Kawar of Jordan, on Saturday confirmed receiving Russia's draft resolution calling for a "humanitarian pause" in the Saudi-led airstrikes in Yemen, but said the 15-member body will need time to consider this proposal.
"The Russian delegation circulated a draft resolution to the Council members regarding humanitarian pauses in Yemen and expressed concerns over the humanitarian situation in Yemen since a long time. The Council members need time to reflect on the Russian proposal," Kawar told reporters.
The UN estimates that the ongoing hostilities in Yemen killed 519 people, including 90 children, over the past two weeks.
Death toll climbed after a Saudi-led coalition of Arab countries launched a military operation pounding positions of Houthi rebels in and around the capital of Sanaa, and also on the outskirts of the besieged government stronghold Aden in Yemen's south.
Earlier on Saturday, the Red Cross, an international aid agency, urged to halt fighting in Yemen for 24 hours to allow for help to be delivered to people in the conflict-torn country.
