MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Russian President Vladimir Putin and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu discussed the situation in the Middle East and Iran’s nuclear program during a telephone conversation Friday, the Kremlin’s press service said.
“During the exchange of opinions on current regional problems, much attention was given to the Middle East settlement, as well as issues tied to the negotiations process on Iran’s nuclear program,” the press service said in a statement.
Both leaders said they were concerned over the situation in Yemen.
"Both sides expressed their serious concerns over the acute exacerbation of the conflict in Yemen. The Russian leader emphasized the importance of joint efforts from the international community in order to reach a peaceful and long-term settlement of the situation in the country," the announcement reads.
This was the first conversation between the two leaders since Netanyahu's right-wing Likud party won the general election in Israel last week, claiming 30 seats in the Israeli Knesset.
President Putin congratulated Netanyahu on his recent reelection.
